The Google Wave Experiment Is Over [ February 8th, 2010 ] Posted in » Internet

Remember this?

Any new product from Google was bound to have a lot of interest in it so for a few months we were obsessed with Wave trying to see what it can do and what it could/would be used for. Invites were rare and coveted defeating the entire point of the service which was to collaborate/share/communicate.

Early users like me found that not many people I knew had been able to sign up for the service and so could not give it a chance.

The problem this time was that Google did not make Wave because there was demand for the product in the market. This was something new. Well, not quite. The concepts already exist in the form of forums and email groups.

Google basically reinvented the forum albeit with less features like quoting, subforums, moderation and added scripting and bots and gadgets. When I first tried out the service I found it confusing, cluttered and lacking in any specific purpose. Sure, you could embed videos and media and things and make it a colourful and interesting visual experience but would you really use Wave for this over a social network? Do you really see yourself and your friend/contacts doing stuff like what you see in the Wave ads?

I always thought that Wave wasn’t unique enough. It felt like an AJAXified forum with a lot of multimedia features and that simply wasn’t interesting/useful enough right now. If some of these features move into social networking sites and emails I would welcome it but using Google Wave as an application is just too vague a concept.

Now all the interest has died away and you see no more mention of it anywhere. Let us leave it to die a dignified death from disuse and work on something else.

Gotcha!

Christopher Pike is one author I remember from the early 2000s who consistently tricked my sister into loaning his novels from our local library. His books resembled standard teen novels on the outside and were also placed next to a huge rack of Sweet Valley novels.

I soon found out* that these novels by Pike start off as young adult drama but quickly turn into a science fiction novel (complete with aliens and spaceships in one instance) and are usually quite good. Every time I read one of these books I would picture the duped person reading in bewilderment as the seemingly normal story took a science fiction detour. Great fun.

*Being too lazy to actually go to the libary to loan books myself and having anyway finished all the interesting ones there a long time ago – it’s a small libary – I usually ended up reading some of the books lying around at home.

Veeraswamy – The Terror That Is TR

TR moodikittu illama indha padam vera edhuthu tholachirukaaru.

In case you didn’t understand what the hell that was all about here is Gowtham’s outraged summary:

analysing the scene

T.R’s sister is in love with some guy…
T.R gave vaaku to someone that he will get his sister to marry his son (wtf)
But then he realised that his sister is in love with another guy
So he gets his sister marry the guy whom she love (its ok)
Now the guy to whom he gave vaaku comes and ask, why he got his sister married to someother guy.

He dies, cos he was not able to keep up his vaaku (with that terrible sudden head turning, to make us realise that he is dead)

then mumtaj dies, since his husband died (The End)

Yep. Serious WTF. Sam Andersonuke potti. If there was a match between TR and Sam, who would win?

An Inspiration

It is said that Jeffery Archery was inspired by this:

Unrelated: Check out Gouthami. A welcome relief in that ghastly era of fat heroines.

Anime Oz

Hmmm. Interesting look. But why does the lion looks like a scarecrow while the scarecrow looks like a cowboy bounty hunter?

Mile Sur… Ennavo Indhila Solranga Pa

Remember that old ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ (I don’t know what it means nor do I care) that we were forced to listen to on Doordarshan over and over again without knowing what the hell it was until we got some real television channels and could remove DD from the channels list? Well, for the 60th Republic Day they remade the whole thing.

Read Krish Ashok’s review of it here: Mile Sur Mera Tomorrow? Fail

Yes, It’s Because Of My Tonsils

Today I met this friend of a friend who was totally surprised when I said I was from [place]. “You don’t have the [place] accent”, he said gesturing at his throat.

I wanted to tell him “Yes, you’re right. I had throat surgery to have my accent removed.” Instead I did the Apu accent and asked if that was preferable expecting him to laugh at it but the guy didn’t quite get it. I suspect he knew people who actually spoke like that! :O
