Not Another Windows Reinstall!
Unbelievable. I had to reinstall Windows again!
I was doing something on the PC when there was a power failure. Fine. I have a UPS. I shutdown the computer. The power came back on in ten minutes as usual and I started up the computer. I double-clicked the connection icon for Airtel and found a nice error message. Error 720, it said. As usual it gave me completely unhelpful data about the error.
I didn’t reinstall Windows right away. I played and finished Fable and then started playing C&C Generals (with Zero Hour, the expansion) last night. I could have gone on playing the numerous games I had but I had some work on the internet and so I burnt myself another copy of the XP UE disk (my copy seemed to be missing) and reinstalled Windows.
Now I’m reinstalling all the programs I need, updating everything and downloading some twenty Windows updates. Boring! And I have to reinstall all the games. That’s the annoying part. Especially World of Warcraft which takes over an hour to install and patch.

Man, I hate Windows.

Not even Windows 98 used to fail at this rate. What the hell are you doing?
June 19th, 2007 at 7:05 pm
Your disk isn’t missing. You gave it to me when I bought my new hard disk. Since you’ve got another copy I’ll keep this one with me.
You do get into a surprising number of problems. And you know this is because of a corrupt Windows file?
June 19th, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Damn you, you XP UE thief! I demand it back, right now. Along with Dexter’s Lab that you’ve been hoarding.
It’s always because of a corrupt Windows file. The entire TCP/IP protocol was missing from my system. My computer simply forgot what the internet meant! Reinstalling Windows components didn’t work at all.

It’s Airtel’s fault! It’s Airtel’s fault! I’m telling you they are really tricky bastards.

Man, I hate Windows. >o_O time to make the switch?!?!?!?
this is exactly the same frustration i had (but well twice as more in intensity) when i was going through roughreinstallation times;/
why cant we make a DVD that has the OS/ drivers, programs preinstalled and everything we need custom burned in so its just one click install next time?
you know those guys over demonoid made this XP performence addition, and in which they removed a lot of stupid components that bloats the xp installation. so if they can remove, maybe we should try the reverse, stuff in some stuff that we need. that make a custome XP UE for ourselves… it maybe difficult but possible no?

I had to reinstall OS X once because the power went off during an update installation. And after reinstalling, it did this ‘Restoring Application Library’ thingie for about 5 minutes, and i didnt have to reinstall anything! Even WoW.
Not a comparison, but Im sure Windows could do this as well. Does Vista?
June 20th, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Arun, don’t blame Airtel for everything. The Windows TCP/IP service stopped and would not start again. That was the problem. That component went missing.
Sindhu, it can be done. With Bart PE Builder or something similar you can make your own custom Windows installation package. I just don’t have the patience to try it.
Raghav, Windows is able to resume installation as well but when you are reinstalling Windows the registry is lost andI have to install WoW all over again. Annoying. And who cares about Vista? No one is going to use it.

Krish, I’m sure it’s trivial to setup a backup partition with an image of a fully featured Windows installation and then restore it when necessary. That’s what Dell does with its Recovery discs.

Waste of hard disk space. Subsidised buggers like you can afford to do it all the time but not normal people like me.
June 20th, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Nah, I don’t do that. No hard drive space to spare. I only have 80 GB total, you know. Besides I don’t need to, been nearly two years since I installed my OS now.

Yeah, you only use your browser. Hardly any chance of files getting corrupted.

Vista is actually not that bad. I installed a legal copy(Microsoft software is free for university students) on my test desktop here with moderate specs - athlon 2100+, 512 megs and a 256 meg geforce fx 5900 xt. I got it to run with aero just fine without any major slowdowns. Visually its definitely on par with OS X now.
June 25th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
Visually, it’s damn nice. A friend has a legit copy installed (came with the lappy).
June 26th, 2007 at 2:14 am
Well I’m definitely not buying it and neither does the University student thing apply in India. Have all the eye candy you want, but is it usable?
June 26th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
I suppose they’d let you turn on and off whatever effects you want. Transparencies are awesome, and letting your graphics card draw the desktop is a sensible thing.
Haha, yeah, never imagined you buying it. You wouldn’t even use the $3 Office Home version if you had the chance.

I have transparencies now (with WindowBlinds) and I find them annoying. Especially if something is flashing in the background and I’m seeing it through another window.
I won’t use any Microsoft product if I can help it. I have OpenOffice and it serves me well. Why would I need bloatware like MS Office?
