Class Tour? No Thank You. Not For Me.
Class mates are going on an ‘educational tour’ of Calicut, Wayand and Ooty from 13th to 16th. Why not simply call it a tour and not pretend that it’s for educational purposes?
It’s this stupid engineering mindset that every single thing has to be educational. No cultural events, very little sports activities, absolutely no extra curricular… you are allowed to have only technical shit like seminars and symposiums. Pathetic.
So, anyway, I’m not going on the tour. I don’t feel like listening to my classmates yell Tamil movie songs and attempt to dance for the entire journey, while discussing the latest Tamil movie releases and the lives of Tamil cinema actors and actresses. No, really, it’s all they do. Very few exceptions. This is all in the name of fun. And they would be offended if I told them that they were acting like immature kids.
I have rather different ideas of fun. A quiet time enjoying the journey. The gentle rhythm of the moving train and the bus. Enjoy the journey, the places and the company. Instead of trying to draw as much attention as possible to yourself.

I prefer walking around, travelling by vehicle is nice sometimes but legwork beats it anyday. It’s much more fun running up and down slopes, walking through undergrowth, sitting in a conifer forest, or resting on a lagoon bank.
Funny people there, but I guess they travel for different reasons. Perhaps trying to compensate for a lack of self-esteem? Ah well, you should’ve gone anyway.

Wayanad is a lovely place. Worth bearing all that. You could take long walks with those ‘exceptions’ in ze mornings and ze nights. That’s what we did. We even managed to sneak off to climb up the highest peak in the area.
The world is kinda warped. Never makes sense. Why would anyone want to leave Kerala? Mallus are crazy fucks. I even met a chap who was proud that mallus were leaving the place to make money. One fine morning you’ll notice that all the mallus have left Kerala. Then, we, of oh-so-pleasant Chennai can resettle there.

You mean get yourself killed.
George, I wouldn’t have liked it. I’m sure.

Not having a mobile phone to distract yourself with does compound problems doesn’t it?
Dude, you should have gone, Vinod went didn’t he?
wiyoats
Sundar.

Ah well Marc. It wouldn’t have killed you. But it’s your choice, eh?
August 14th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
should have gone at least to see the places. you could have gone and taken your revenge on everyone by not talking to them.
August 14th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
I have a spare phone lying around, Sundar. Yeah, Vinod went because he probably likes that sort of thing.
Suren, why spoil the fun for other people?
August 14th, 2007 at 10:11 pm
No, Vinod doesn’t.

Fortunately, our department HOD is against the idea of a tour. Hurray! Reason: No female staffs willing to accompany, girl students in perpetual danger despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
August 15th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Sundar, it’s probably a question of him being able to tolerate it and me not being able to.
Arun, what a lame reason. Anyway would you have gone if your class was going?

I had gone on one of these tours. I would be an idiot if I go along with them again. I’d rather camp in a sty grunting ‘oink, oink’ than go along with them for a week. The sad thing is they asked me a write a report on the tour so that it could be published in the newsletter.

You’d better explain in more detail why you didn’t like it.
August 17th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Well, all the arrangements were rather shoddy. Poor planning and accommodation made difficult by drunken classmates barging into your room just to show you that they are drunk. I don’t know what the deal was. They didn’t conduct themselves as matured ones should. The train journey was a nightmare. They sang Tamil songs all night and some Hindi songs too were thrown in for good measure. Dance, multiple pelvic thrusts in rapid staccato bursts to some unpopular beats. Oh yeah, girls in the name of crooning popular songs hurt my ears even more. They ran here and there like really excited school kids causing much ruckus.
August 17th, 2007 at 9:16 pm
That’s exactly what my classmates would have done too. I rest my case.

MarcZ — you are older and wiser than your batchies.
August 25th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Perhaps. But this kind of behaviour seems to be the norm rather than the exception.
