Did We Get What We Fought For?

August 15th. Indian Independence Day. 60 years of independence from British rule.

I woke up late (what else are holidays for?). At 1.30 PM to be more precise. Earlier in the morning I heard the little kids in my apartment complex march around chanting “Left, right, left…” in their white uniforms. They did that for Republic Day too.

The newspapers came with a lot of supplements. The Hindu as usual had a lot of long boring articles, of which I read one. It was about the powers of the Judiciary and the Election Commission, unlikely guardians of democracy. Abandoned the papers in favour of lunch. Maybe I’ll read them later in the evening.

I don’t really feel any enthusiasm for Independence Day. I read the newspapers and I know what’s really going on with the country and I don’t think there’s anything to be proud of. Our freedom was won with great difficulty and the freedom struggle is inspiring but we immediately made a mess of things with Partition. The ideals which drove a nation to throw out its oppressors have long since been abandoned.

Atleast I get a holiday out of it.

Yesterday I had to go to college since I hadn’t gone for the tour. We were supposed to be finishing some experiments for the CASE Tools lab but it was really boring so we abandoned that. While the other chaps had nothing to do and were idly wandering around the internet, I was prepared. I plugged in my flash drive, installed a comic book reader and was reading the comics I’d transferred to the flash drive from my hard disk the previous night. I finished a few books of Promethea.

Last night I read Batman: The Dark Knight Strike Again and like every other Batman comic it was awesome! You should read it.

If India was still under British rule, the country would have looked a bit like Honk Kong or at least, a bit developed.

  2. Marc says:

    Possibly.

Though it is not right for a country to be ruled by another I cannot help but think that things would have been better off that way.

  3. raghavsr says:

Why aren’t the politicians allowing the country to develop? They are always in need of bribe money.,

  4. Marc says:

They are greedy bastards, that’s why. I wouldn’t mind if they stole some money and used the rest correctly. They take all the money and ask for more.

“Our freedom was won with great difficult”?

  6. Marc says:

Typo. Fixed. Comment on the article. Typos are secondary.

    Hey, Sundar forgot his WIYOATS!

  8. Marc says:

    Dude! Don’t remind him!
