A Few Beautiful Songs

This is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard till now. It is by a well known Indian band called MotherJane and the song is called Mind Street. I’d like you to listen to it and tell me what you think.

The second beautiful song I’d like you to try is Iron Maiden - Blood Brothers. I don’t usually listen to their songs but this one is exceptional. Powerful music, amazing vocals and an epic feel to the song.

Here is another favourite of mine. The theme song from the Tamil movie Manmathan. I really like this movie for the slick visuals and the amazing music.

Come act your dream in mindstreet.
Do what you want, go where you please.
Kick the devil in his B’s
You don’t have to live on your knees.

Sounds good with the guitars and mild drum beats.

  2. Marc Z says:

I don’t know how they managed to make such a beautiful song. Their other songs aren’t as good as this.

  3. Chetan says:

Their lyrics are usually pretty decent unlike other Indian bands. I actually liked all the other songs from insane biography too.

But yeah, Mindstreet would be my pick from that album.

  4. Marc Z says:

Mind Street is on a totally different level altogether. The rest of their songs are normal compared to it.

For desi rock, you should also try “Anthim Sanskaar” by Nirvikalpa. It’s Hindi death metal. Very interesting. Some of my all time favourites - Shine on you Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd, Everything in it’s right place by Radiohead and East Hastings by Godspeed you black emperor.

  6. Marc Z says:

Oh we follow the Indian scene.

My personal favourites are Indian bands like Pentagram, Bhayanak Maut, Demonic Resurrection, LBG and Pin Drop Violence.

I wanted your comments on those specific songs I mentioned.

  7. Suren says:

all good, try out a band called pain of salvation for awesome music. i’d recommend the album 12:5

  8. Sundar says:

    Why?

  9. Marc Z says:

It’s music. No reason is required to try or listen to music.

  10. Krish Ashok says:

The song is technically great. Good vocals, tight drumming and great guitaring. Much better than lot of bands Ive heard. But I have this irrational personal thing against Indian bands that play a completely western genre without reinventing it as their own. Im not quite expecting Indian ocean all the time, but you know, let me give you an example. Rammstein plays hard rock, but there is something teutonic about their music (ofcourse, a richter scale 9 level bass voice singing in German helps, for one) but the genre is their own. System of a Down somehow infuse their Armenian roots into their riffing and vocals. But I dont understand why Indian bands cannot get creative enough to define their own genre. To me, they all end up sounding like complete clones of American bands or British bands.

Ofcourse, this is just personal taste. But I do have this feeling that Indian bands need to get local, and I am not suggesting gaana beat remixes or Hindi ballads or Tamil metal. English is as much an Indian language today as any other. So why the American accent? Why the Brit accent? Why the same subjects? Why not something contemporary and Indian for a change? Something like what Chakrasonic and Yogi B are doing with Tamil hip hop. Ofcourse, there’s the bling, the sneakers and the other black influences, but the lyricism and the delivery is very Tamil and something new altogether.

All said, Mother Jane - Mindstreet is a great song. As good, if not better than a lot of American bands that are mainstream today. But really, I don’t want to be comparing them to anybody else. But their music forces me to.

  11. Sundar says:

    How?

  12. Marc Z says:

It’s because (atleast in Tamilnadu) music and movies have become to tightly wound up that other types of music have a lot of trouble getting popular. It is only now that other genres are getting into the scene with great difficultly.

Another reason why many India bands sing in English is because that’s the only way the entire country can understand them. In India, even neighbouring states don’t speak the same language.

  13. Florchakh says:

It’s understandable, at least there are 1,13 billion of people in India.

This is okay. Also I can say I do like IM a lot ;)

  14. Arun says:

“Complete clones of American bands or British bands.”
I suppose that’s very true. Maybe they need some time to define their own genre. But hey we will see that happen, of course. Along with our grandchildren. :)

  15. Suren says:

its not common for bands to infuse their ethnic roots into the music as such. can’t blame indian bands for that. maybe they should try something like nile or orphaned land, add some native instruments.

  16. Marc Z says:

That type of music is not the domain of other English speaking countries alone. Why can’t people here make the same kind of music? What’s wrong with being clones of them as long as their music is good?

Ultimately, the only thing that matters is good music.

  17. Sundar says:

    When?

  18. Arun says:

Marc, then it would meet the same fate as Bollywood. They need to get creative to get noticed, not only in India. If Rammstein, whose lyrics sound jargon to us can make it globally, why not us?

And yes, Sundar is an obnoxious little brat who gave up his WIYOATS way of life.

  19. Marc Z says:

You’re forgetting that they are getting noticed. Our bands are opening for famous bands like Iron Maiden.

Rammstein has hardly made it globally. Only a select group of people who like that genre of music listen to them in India and other non German speaking countries.

  20. Arun says:

Only one band, Junkyard Groove did it I think. What I’m saying is Raamstein stands out as the most successful German band. Everyone knows Raamstein is a German band at least.

  21. Marc Z says:

Um, no. Not one of my classmates in college knows about them. That’s not everyone.

  22. Florchakh says:

C’mon Rammstein does have so many fans in different countries, not only German speaking. I have heard about their live shows played even in Japan!

  23. Marc Z says:

Yes, they are very popular in all the developed countries where they listen to different forms of music. My country prides itself on being backward and we get a lot of regional music that are linked to films instead of independent efforts and foreign bands.

  24. Suren says:

moksha and parikrama have both toured with iron maiden. jyg will also make it big. indian rock is definitely getting there.

  25. Marc Z says:

And these are the bands that Arun said were similar to American and European bands.
