Playing ‘Counter-Strike: Condition Zero’ With Hamachi - A Tutorial
After many hours of testing with collegemates and reading support forums I’ve finally managed to host Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (CS: CZ) games and get clients to connect to me successfully with Hamachi.
I’m posting a guide to hosting a game and joining a game for people who still have trouble getting this to work.
To join a CS CZ game:
1. Download and install Hamachi. Choose the Free version while installing and not the Premium version. Rather obvious, right?
2. Run Hamachi and click the Create or join networks button and choose Join existing network.
3. To join our network get the username and password from someone and enter it and it will connect to our network.
4. Turn off your firewall (or disable it). Remember to turn it back on after you finish playing.
5. Run CS: CZ
6. Go to Options and change your name.
7. Press the ~ key on the keyboard. It is to the left of the 1 key on the top row of the keyboard.
8. Type connect 5.46.80.247 to connect if I am hosting the game. If someone else is hosting the game look at their Hamachi IP address and use that instead of mine.
9. The game will connect and you can start playing.
Errors:
If you get a Class C error, the host has not set up Hamachi aliases correctly. Ask the host to read the section below. If you cannot connect to the game for any other reason it’s a problem with your firewall (have you turned it off?).
To host a CS: CZ game:
1. Turn off or disable your firewall. If you are using Windows firewall, remember to turn it off from the Control Panel.
If turning off firewall doesn’t work, try setting exceptions for ‘Half Life Launcher’ from within the firewall program.
2. Run Hamachi. Click the last button and choose Preferences. Then click Window and check the Show “Advanced…” peer menu item checkbox and click OK.
3. Now for every new player who joins your networks you have to do the following steps:
A. Right click the player’s entry in Hamachi
B. Click Advanced…
C. In the Peer VPN alias box enter the first three parts of your Hamachi IP address (example: 5.46.80) and add the last part of the player’s IP address (example: .191) so that it makes a new IP address.
D. Click OK. (UPDATE: No need to restart Hamachi. Tested.)
4. Launch the game. Click Create New Multiplayer Game option and start the game. Other players can connect to you as long as you have set an alias for each of them.
Note:
You have to set an alias and restart Hamachi every time for every new player who joins the network for the first time. Power on and off is sometimes not enough.
If you have any problems leave a comment and I’ll find you a solution.
Thanks to Vinod, Harikumar and Gokul for being patient for hours to help me get the game working correctly.

Vinod says:
Well this is what i’ve been looking for. I was unable to host the game when your Pc was not working. well now i’ll give it a try tomorrow. I made the mistake in the alias part. hehehe… Good post dude (as usual ;-))….

Vinny, I hope the game versions match, cause sometimes they don’t. Everyone who’s playing now has my copy of the game so no version problems so far.
Isha, UT is just chaos. CS is more tactical and realistic.

Isha, chaos is nice but it gets boring quickly. It’s great fun when you’re playing Capture The Flag with a lot of people you know. Counter-Strike takes time to master and requires skill to play. There’s also a lot of teamwork involved so it’s more interesting.
Suren was never good at CS and anything later than the original Unreal Tournament doesn’t work on his computer. Hence his views.
Hi, Sriram. Where are you from?

When you have set all the aliases for all your clients correctly, you will not get this Class C error. We’ve tested this out and seen it.
Tell me your Hamachi IP and a client’s Hamachi IP. I’ll tell you if your alias is set correctly.

Hi Gen.
The solution to your problem would be to get a new Hamachi address for you or your friend. You are given a new Hamachi IP when you reinstall the application. Now you can use my tutorial.

thanks

Marc Z says:
Juncal, you can also change the last digit of the IP to set the alias. I’ve tested it and it works. Set his alias as 5.73.58.1 or something and it will work (provided someone else doesn’t have 1 as the last part of the IP address in your network.
Yeah, starting a custom game or multiplayer game or whatever it is called.

Your firewalls must be blocking the connections. Turn off your firewall by shutting it down or reducing protection levels and try again.

Akhil, you have a different version of the game. ‘Play Custom Game’ is equivalent to ‘New Multiplayer Game’. Connect to someone and see if your game version matches with theirs. If you get a version error then it isn’t compatible.

Salman, this is a blog (not a site).
Setting aliases through Hamachi (or that text file for earlier versions) should definitely solve the alias problem. If it doesn’t you are not doing it correctly. Check every minor detail. I have never encountered a Class C error when the alias is set.
Also you could just type connect his.real.ip.address to directly connect over the internet rather than using Hamachi.
We use Hamachi because of the chat features and the listing of all the online people in our group.

Hello, I’ve been trying to set a game up using your guide but to no avail. Initially I tried with no alias setting and got the C Class error, that’s fair enough, just testing that everything goes as described in here. Then, I tried aliasing, only to find out that we had the same last IP octet (.141) so that did not work out. I tried entering a different octet for my friend, say .140, while keeping the first 3 octets the same as my hosting IP. Still nothing… I am out of ideas and have tried almost everything, any suggestions please? Thanks.

Posted on February 6th, 2008 at 8:01 am

frogger, as long as you both have the same version of the game it should work. But there are problems with Vista. Get rid of Vista and it should work on XP.
Posted on February 6th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
LittleHelpHerePlz says:
Thanks for the suggestion, but as I stated in my first comment, changing the last octet DOES NOT work. Any other ideas?
Posted on February 6th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Marc Z says:
Actually, it does work. That is why I linked back to my comment. I’ve tested it. You can change the last part of the IP in the alias to whatever value and it will still work. I had to do that when one of the people in the network ended up with the last part of his IP address the same as my IP address.
If you still say it doesn’t work, uninstall Hamachi completely and install it again to get a new IP.
Posted on February 6th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
LittleHelpHerePlz says:
Well, been there done that, uninstalled hamachi then reinstalled it, same IP
Posted on February 6th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

A complete reinstall would involve removing all Hamachi files and registry entries before reinstalling to force a new IP.
Posted on February 6th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
LittleHelpHerePlz says:
Ok, thanks for that, so I uninstall hamachi thru Add/Remove, but what should I use to get rid of the registry entries?
Posted on February 6th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Jocke says:
Actually, to force a new IP to Hamachi there is an easier way:
Shut down Hamachi.
Startmenu -> Run -> type: %APPDATA% -> Press enter
You should now be in a folder called Application Data or something. Find the folder “Hamachi” there. Rename this folder to Hamachi-backup or whatever, exit folder and start Hamachi and you will have a new IP.
http://logmeinwiki.com/wiki/Hamachi:Mediation_server_has_rejected_your_login_request
That’s where I got it from, good luck!
Posted on February 8th, 2008 at 3:25 am
Marc Z says:
Thanks Jocke. That should clear things up.
A complete reinstall would involve removing all traces of Hamachi like this folder and any registry entries with some sort of registry cleaning program.

If you get a ‘Retrying connection to server’ message it is a connection problem (firewall or router blocking access).

Narrin says:
Ok Marc, I’ve read your blog from end to end, followed all your steps exactly, and I’m still getting the Class C error. I installed, uninstalled, restarted, read your blog from end to end again, still no luck. Here is a detailed narrative of what i’ve been doing.
1. I’m running CS 1.6 (steamless hack from Digital Zone); I’ve already purchased Counter Strike 4 times so I don’t feel bad running this hack because Steam sucks the big bite!
2. I know my friend has installed the exact program and version because I installed it myself.
3. I have a static IP ADSL account and he has a dynamic IP ADSL account. Our homes are nearby and when I used to have the dynamic IP ADSL our trunk lines matched and we could connect and play without a hitch. Once I upgraded to the static IP ADSL, our trunk lines didn’t match anymore and we got the Class C error. So I turned to Hamachi to help out.
4. I installed Hamachi version 1.0.2.5 on both of our computers. My Hamachi IP is 5.17.36.178 and his is 5.41.29.160. I went under the Advanced tab and gave him an Alias of 5.17.29.160. First two fields should be enough, NOT..class C error. Then I gave him an alias of 5.17.36.160..again class C error. I exited out of the Hamachi program both times and restarted both times just to make sure. I’ve also installed, uninstalled, and installed again.
5. I don’t have any routers installed in my system, and I don’t have any firewalls turned on. My friend has the ability to see my servers, we just always get the Class C error. Any thoughts?
Respectfully,
Narrin

Marc Z says:
Narrin, sorry I forgot to reply. You seem to be running into all kinds of problems with the game. Why don’t you try a direct connection over the net? Ask your friend to start the game and type ‘connect‘ on your console where his IP is his usual IP address (not Hamachi IP). It should work fine.
We use Hamachi for convenience since you can see who is online and communicate with them. It isn’t absolutely essential for playing the game over the Internet.

Nilesh says:
can i play midtown madness on hamachi?
Posted on March 2nd, 2008 at 10:52 am
Marc Z says:
Nilesh, we play CS CZ on our network. Not 1.6. Check the supported games list for other games.
To the strange person who entered ‘HELPME!!!’ as a name:
I have never used the sv_lan command. You might want to try it if nothing else works.
Posted on March 2nd, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Nilesh says:
plz direct me to where the supported game list is.
u can list a few here, i have command and conqer {yuri’s revenge] and mid town madness.

Marc Z says:
Why would I post other supported games here? Don’t be ridiculous. Find it yourself.

Marc Z says:
Nilesh, try here.
Kevster, we can’t see the servers in the LAN section either but by using the connect console command we are able to connect and play.
Posted on March 3rd, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Kevster1994 says:
thx about that… so, if i use the connect console command, wad should i write? is it “connect (hamachi ip address”?
Posted on March 4th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Marc Z says:
Yes, that is the command. If my methods do not work at all then you might want to try using the actual IP address of the person.

It gives me an error called valve verification rejected when i try to connect to my frnd’s ip[:(]

Marc Z says:
I’ve never heard of this error. Perhaps your friend has a retail copy of the game while you have the cracked one.

Akil says:
Your dll [cl_dlls/client dll] different from the server. i get this error if i try to login to the other servers. plz help!!!
Posted on March 8th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Marc Z says:
Kevster, it might be a firewall problem if the game says it is retrying connection to server over and over again.
Akil, you will have to get the right version of the game to play on those servers. No other way.

Raghav says:
Greetings Marc.
I looked through the comments to find the error the I get , but couldn’t.
The error i get is “Failed to contact game server”
I use CS 1.6, with the latest version of hamachi (the one where the aliasing is done within hamachi itself).
My friends on the network have been aliased. The firewall has been turned off.
This is what I do:
Once Hamachi is open, i create my network , say “X”. My friends join the network, I alias them by changing the last octet. Then I open CS. Click “New Game”, and start a map. But once the map starts, and i press ESC to come back to main menu, I can’t seem to find my own created game in the LAN list .
What am I doing wrong ?
Please help!
Posted on March 17th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Marc Z says:
Raghav, we cannot see the game in the LAN list either but we can still connect to the game using the Hamachi IP address of the person hosting the game. For CS 1.6 you can use the Internet IP address of the host directly. Hamachi is not required.

Raghav says:
Hey thanks man.
I gave it another couple of tries, but to no avail. I finally learnt how to host a password restricted internet server instead to play with friends. Now I’m wondering why people make such a fuss over Hamachi as though its the only way to play with friends online.
Oh well.
Thanks again.

Raghav says:
Hey thanks man, works just fine with an internet server. And its not even remotely as confusing as trying to use hamachi!
Posted on March 19th, 2008 at 7:17 am
Marc Z says:
beby, read comments 113, 114 and 117.
Raghav, Hamachi is only for CS CZ (much better graphics than 1.6) and other games that refuse to work over the Internet painlessly.

Marc Z says:
Roshan, your first problem can be fixed using the steps I’ve mentioned in my tutorial and the information in the comments of this post.
The second problem usually occurs when you try to connect to legal Steam servers with cracked copies of the game.
As for your third problem, I have never encountered it.
yoman, you say you read all the comments but I don’t think so. In comment 114 I have given you a solution.

Hi There,
My Hamachi IP is : 5.194.155.197

Since iam hosting i changed his peer Vpn Alias to : 5.194.155.81
and when he connected,he got a Class C
Where are we going wrong ?
Firewall turned Off on both sides

Posted on April 4th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Marc Z says:
In the rare case of a Class C error even after setting the alias correctly, I can only suggest a Hamachi reinstall. It isn’t supposed to happen and if it does I cannot help you.
