Reducing Automated Comment Spam

Alright it looks like the RSS copyright message is working fine. If you find your content being scraped I recommend that you use it.

Now we move on to comment spam. I get about 4 to 8 comments a day from friends depending on the number of posts and how interesting they are. I also get about 100 spam comments a day advertising all kinds of nonsense. They are all neatly caught by Akismet but I still have to scan through them in case some real comments are caught among them. Happens sometimes, especially to George’s comments.

I’m trying out a plugin called WP-SpamFree that claims to completely eliminate automated comment spam. I’ve activated the plugin and will post results in a few days. But what is worrying is that they don’t mention how it works anywhere on the plugin page.

While I’m trying out this plugin, please check if your comments appear as soon as you’ve submitted them. If they don’t, make sure to leave a message on the shoutbox notifying me and I’ll see if it’s in the Akismet spam section or if SpamFree ate it up.
