That’s India For You

Indian society is messed up. I have always said this and have seen many people disagreeing with me. They claim that our society has good values but these people also think that arranged marriage is good so their opinion isn’t worth crap. If everyone just admitted there was a serious problem and tried to improve things it wouldn’t be so bad. However Indians continue to delude themselves with terms such as ‘good culture’ and ‘upcoming superpower’.

We claim to have ‘culture’ and ‘values’ but we also compete with Muslim countries in treating women like shit. I saw these videos on this blog post and decided to put them up here.

This is the kind of country we live in. Can you blame me for wanting to get the hell out of here?

Some of my friends say that this happens since our society is conservative and boys loose control when they see a girl since they’re not given sufficient freedom to hang-out with them.

Thats not a fully logical explanation but I think these are isolated events. Sadly, its not easy to rectify such a huge population from doing these sins. Its very unfortunate. But look at the bright side. We’re much better than Muslim countries who bitch with the girls.

    I agree with that reasoning.

These are not isolated incidents. Harassment happens a lot and most of it goes unreported.

I don’t see how we are different from Muslim countries in this matter. They use religion as an excuse while we blame it on a few bad elements. Usually the blame is shifted to migrant workers from a nearby State.

  3. sindhu says:

molesting is everywhere, even in european countries, marc you cant get away with that.

  4. sindhu says:

    away from that* shucks;/

  5. rachel says:

WTF? Screw the culture, is touching a gal where they shouldn’t is called GOOD CULTURE. I feel like shooting these ppl where i shouldn’t( sensor cut ;) ). Mtc buses are worst in that manner. Sufficient freedom( i really agree with that point). whatever we say or govt tries to implement new laws against molestation, these animals will never change.

The problem is not only with society but also police dept
during that Mumbai incident, police said
if you want your wife, to be safe keep her inside the house why do you bring her outside during late hours. That’s awful.

  6. Marc says:

It’s not as bad as in India. Abroad, you can go to the police. Here, it is the police you have to stay away from.

  7. George says:

Somebody wrote about studies proving that less restrictive societies lead to less rape and stuff like that. I’ll find it, it had some interesting stuff to say about porn.

  8. Karthik says:

I think we can blame it on the lack of good and sensible education.

Educated people with good ethos getting involved in such things may however be called ‘isolated incidents’.

Another thing we are missing out here is bad peer groups. I have seen (some) people who form these so-called-cool gangs talk about girls. It’s a taboo talking to girls, but talking about them (and it’s not in the pleasant way either)is fine.

More often than not, it’s the people who can’t muster enough courage to go up and talk to girls that get frustrated and get involved in such rubbish.(there are exceptions again which includes people who actually cant talk ;) , people who are actually shy…etc)And to think that colleges impose rules where we can’t talk to girls….where’s it leading to ?

  9. Sriram says:

I have seen do u really feel that this comments will suffice enough to change the society….something should be done like anniyan to curb these menace

  10. Adithya says:

Our country is shit. We can’t change it. End of story.

  11. Arun says:

I think it’s partly because women expose their weaknesses too much. If they can overbear with their steady will and mind I guess they can realize their voice in this Country. The mindset that women should be a full time cook and a potential baby carrier and that her opinions and desires count less is predominant still. And the alarming thing is women themselves enforce it among their kind. My Grandma generation still believes that women should cook and sing while men go out and work. Sad but true. Her initial reaction to the molestation news was, ‘why won’t they stay home as young girls should?’. I believe this reflects in men’s prejudice.

  12. Marc says:

Rachel, the aggressive police and the ineffective legal system are a serious problem. They only encourage offenders.

    George, so where’s that study?

Karthik, we are supposed to be educated people (B.E. students). And how do our collegemates behave? The problem is way the society is set up to keep men and women apart until marriage. I agree with the other points.

Sriram, maybe you will become like the Anniyan dude? You have my support.

    Adithya, well said.

Arun, for the last time, it’s not the women’s fault. If a women is assertive she is immediately targeted by everyone. I wish the people from the previous generation hurry up and die so that we can get rid of all the old traditions and similar bullshit.

  13. Adithya says:

Marc it doesn’t matter if people in the previous generation die you still can’t change it because there are people like that even in our generation. Hell there are some in my class! And as long as there are terrorist parties like Shiv Sena we can’t change anything. They actually went out and got the molesters on bail and said something like those women deserved it!

  14. Arun says:

Don’t you think she is targeted by women as well if she asserts herself? That’s what I’m pointing out. I don’t think old generation dying can make women’s suffering any less as they soon pass on the seed and die.

  15. Marc says:

Adithya, you’re right. We can’t change these people. Ever.

Arun, I agree with the older generation forcing their questionable values upon you but I also know many girls who are free from that kind of brain washing.

  16. rachel says:

Support and protection is really less for women in India, whatever be the case.

  17. George says:

See, I can’t recall the URL but this Debian dude called Russell Coker was talking about it a year ago.

In any case, it’s screwed up any way you look at it. Who was burning effigies when that woman actress (Khushboo?) did something? Women, lots of them. If those at the receiving end of bad treatment are so motivated to treat other people badly, then there is no salvation. If you want change, you stand up and ask for it, you stand up and demand it, you get up and gather people to your cause. Or, if you’re like Marc, get out the first chance you get. That’s a fair option, no problem with that.

But sitting here, choosing to live here, then choosing to just whine about the bad treatment of women and not doing anything even though you’re a woman yourself, that’s pathetic. If you care so much, get out there and do it if it involves you. It’s not my fight, or the politician’s fight, it’s yours – stand up and be counted when it matters.

  18. Marc says:

George, you’re forgetting that the women have been brainwashed by the men. The men control the women that protest against women trying to be free.

  19. George says:

Reminds me of that thing those IIT fellows did, some weird ass cult chant act thing. You had to see it to believe it. It was after all the mono-acts, I think. Chain the…

I like that last sentence, it has a nice rhythm to it. However, if they’re so susceptible, then that’s just how they’re going to be. Cattle will remain cattle forever.

  20. Marc says:

That is why India will not change.

  21. George says:
