Gowtham Is Eating Our Bandwidth!
A few days ago Ragha sent me a message and telling me that Ampli5.org had run out of bandwidth and asked me to fix it. This was odd since I had set the maximum bandwidth for that account to 10 GB and it wasn’t likely that all of the people with blogs on the account would use up that much. The bandwidth usage for last month was only 2 GB (for that account).
Imagine my surprise when I got home and found the account showing 9 GB of bandwidth used. So I changed the upper limit to 20 GB and set about examining who was using that much bandwidth. It turned out to be Gowtham’s blog. I called up Gowtham and asked him if he had done anything out of the ordinary and he told me that he hadn’t. Meanwhile one of the people at my host contacted me and told me that the particular blog was using up a lot of bandwidth and was causing 200% CPU usage.
Later at night I checked Awstats for the subdomain and it turned out that the massive bandwidth usage was caused by a single IP address. And this IP address was actually the server’s own IP address! What the hell. By now the bandwidth usage was 18 GB, and it was only 6 days into the month. I asked George to reinstall the blog hoping that it would help and it did, but no before bandwidth usage was 25 GB.

It’s that theme. Make sure he never uses it again.

How did you figure that?

If the CPU usage goes up extremely high it’s always related to the bad scripting, that’s how he did that!

It persisted even after a WordPress reinstall and even with the default theme.
