We Do Not Use Insects As Currency

Money is referred to as BUCKS, not BUGS.

If you are going to use a new word, why don’t you look it up and make sure how it is spelt/pronounced? You would avoid making a total fool of yourself when someone points out your mistake. You have the Internet and dictionaries and Wikis galore. Look stuff up and read instead of looking only at the pretty pictures. (Half your computer problems would be solved if you’d just read and understand what’s on the damn screen.)

    Damn it, and I always thought bugs was the right usage. Thanks for enlightening me, Marc. :P

    P.S: Commenting on Marc’s blog improves your vocabulary. So, please do.

    Deer or insect. Who cares as long as one understands what the other person is trying to say.

    You mentioned it in passing. This is a full fledged post.

    ‘Who cares as long as one understands what the other person is trying to say’ is another common excuse to save face when a mistake is pointed out.

    Well, you know what they say, Spelling, that terror visited on human beings from the cradle onwards, should be pensioned off.

    PS: I like the title

    Déja-vu, by the way. Not déja-vous. (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

    Yeah, nice title Marc.

  11. Sundar says:

    Nope, I take care not to make such a mistake, but also don’t sit around peevishly pointing out mistakes.

  12. Karthik says:

    @Sundar,

    I will have to take Marc’s side. I hate it when people who can’t construct a simple sentence in English think its cool to use such terms and totally puck* up in doing so.

    So a bye or rupees is enough to get your thought across. It is not necessary that you use a “chow” or “bugs” to try and sound cool. (Ofcourse, I am not refering to you. You as we all know, are a gatherer. ;) )

  15. Marc Z says:

    Sundar, if you don’t point them out how will people know they’ve made a mistake? The problem is people like you who think they are oh so smart and tolerant who accept mistakes and let language degrade to SMS-speak.

    Suren, atleast I’m not like Cartoon Network. They’ve been playing the same Tom & Jerry episodes for the past 16 years.

    (Now some people will come and say they still like Tom & Jerry and how it’s a classic. Bullshit. You can’t watch the same thing hundreds of times. Move on!)

  16. Karthik says:

    @Marc,
    It’s meant for the next generation to enjoy. :P Stop watching the same stuff. There are 100 channels to choose from. (You have a set top box don’t you ?)

  17. Anusha says:

    Jeez Marc, pointing out mistakes is fine I guess, if you want people to improve, but shoving it down their throats like this will get you nowhere. You don’t make any grammatical errors, why do you care if the others do?

    Posted on March 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

  18. Marc Z says:

    Karthik, when did I say I kept watching it. In fact, I clearly said I don’t. When I pay for a channel I expect new stuff on it.

    Anusha, pointing things out gently will get you nowhere. You have much to learn.

  19. Sundar says:

    And standing around pointing out mistakes and pissing everyone off is smart? My point is, it is pointless to point out mistakes, because no one’s ever going to listen. The people who keep saying bugs will keep saying bugs. So, it is better to be tolerant.

  20. George says:

    @Karthik: Woah wait, what?! People use the word ‘chow’ to refer to money? Since when?!

    @Anusha: Ah, close, but no cookie. Isn’t it déjà vu? The one thing I do is remember my accents. But then, with a keyboard full of µ’s and ä’s and û’s, I can’t blame you for having missed one.

    To whomsoever it may (or more likely, may not) concern:
    In any case, I just wanted to say that I often type in a conversational style and leave ellipses (no, not that kind) everywhere. Or commas, some of my longer stuff gets hit by commavalanches.

  21. Marc Z says:

    Sundar, people have actually listened. And the ones who read my blog now know their mistake. Mission accomplished.

    George, he said ‘to sound cool’. Not ‘to refer to money’.

    Anusha, beaten at your own game. How does it feel?

    I actually saw a signature on slashdot that said something similar today. I should’ve bookmarked the user page. Went something like “Never use a word in writing that you’ve only heard being used.”

  23. Anusha says:

    Be nice, George. I have flamenco dancers at my disposal. Well, not yet, but soon enough.

    He’s right anyway, the keyboard here’s MESSED up. I make the weirdest typos here.

  24. Karthik says:

    @George,

    You must have (and I guess Marc too) missed the word “bye” for chow.

    @Sundar,

    I really doubt if Marc types standing around. ;) (Just a thought. Thinking about it though, it would indeed be amusing.)

  27. Marc Z says:

    I did mean that they used ‘chow’ for ‘bye’. That’s what I pointed out to George.

    We’ll continue when I point out the next annoying people make. It’s a tie between ‘passed out seniors’ and ‘getting dismissed from college’.

  28. George says:

    @Anusha: Would I be anything but nice? I want my postcard :)

    @Marc, Karthik: I just understood that they meant “ciao”. It never struck me.

    @Nobody: I do believe that the next annoying-people make will be better than the last one. Annoying People MkII wasn’t very good.
