December Isn’t So Bad

It turns out that some people obsessed with the idea of working for Infosys logged into the Campus Connect website and somehow determined that the join date for their batch was in December 2008. This information (the accuracy of which has not yet been determined) must have somehow reached my parents through unknown sources, prompting my father to suddenly and unexpected suggest (for the first time ever) that I prepare for the CAT.

Prepare For The CAT

Now I like the idea of going to work in December. The more holidays I get, the better! But some people are worried about losing out on six months’ worth of salary. I laugh at these people. I also like the idea of not going to work and studying to get into a business school (a fate Vinod had resigned himself to… before passing the one arrear he had through re-evaluation).

Laugh your rich ass off!! Bugger. We poor people want to make some money. I will have to pay for my MS you see. But , yea I can do something useful in those six months.

  2. George says:

Yeah, fellow can just live off his ill-gotten gains while the rest of us struggle through life to pay for soggy dosas that don’t fill the stomach.

I thought you wanted to do business school.

  3. Praveen says:

Oooh! So, you are gonna start preparing right away? ;)

  4. Satish says:

Laugh as much as you can. If you read the news paper regularly, it wont be difficult to understand that one out of every four people holding a campus offer from Infosys-TCS-Wipro-Satyam will be asked not to join them. And out of the remaining three, at least two will be asked to join after March 09, that is if the business scenario does not worsen. All the best to you if you think you are getting 6 months holiday. It coule well be 9 months to 1 year OR a fresh new beginning with job search :)

  5. Marc says:

Karthik, go do that MS and learn something.

George, you went to Egypt for sightseeing. You don’t talk about money.

Praveen, yeah. I am going to start studying immediately. In fact, I am right now.

Satish, every single person holding a campus offer will be called for training. Companies can’t arbitrarily reject people like that. The join date might be later, yes, but they will be called. Stop spreading rumours. I challenge you to back up these claims with proof.

The picture you paint is overly dramatic. Profits of companies have reduced but there is still massive demand all over the world. The people who should be worried are those who got into top IT companies easily even though they don’t have the required skill set.

  6. Sundar says:

Now, I am worried on reading that last paragraph of Marc’s comment.

  7. Karthik says:

No, but Marc is right. If you think/thought it was a big deal that you got the job then chances are you are gonna be fired. Not just because of that, but because you yourself know you don’t/didn’t deserve it in the first place.

You are expected to work wherever you go these days. I remember the “bullshit can take you only this far” philosophy. :)

  8. Karthik says:

    Hey, where’s my comment ?

  9. Rachel says:

If you have the skill then chances are really less to kick you out. If you fear then you must be lacking something. And Champ ( Karthik ) definetly your outta of this area of lacking something ;)

  10. sharad says:

so dude when i come do u think there will be the same boom that is currently present(i.e:2 yrs from now?)!?

  11. Marc says:

    Sundar, over scene podadha.

Sharad, why are you depending upon the so called boom for employment? Don’t you have any confidence in your skills? There is always a demand for smart people and if you are good enough there’ll always be a job for you.

  12. harish says:

marc u gather…sundar you too gather with marc

  13. sharad says:

oh! i see but hey ppl value u on ur percentage of marks scored in india…so smart ppl with no percentage or right degreedun stand a chance to guys who have 80% to 85%…unlike foreign where u get employed only on ur skills!RIGHT???

  14. sharad says:

AND also dude…most ppl,who say they r gonna do an MS..after joining an MNC…really dun do it…they jus continue to work!u dun like to study once u start working!!
    (90% of the ppl!!!)

  15. Gowtham says:

Anyways you are going to get paid sitting in your home, by other ways

  16. Karthik says:

    @Sharad,

Percentage is important yes .(even abroad) But it’s not the only judging criteria. If you think you are really skilled and don’t give a damn about percentages, maybe you should try your hand at entrepreneurship.

People don’t quit because the salary in IT after 2 years is pretty decent. And to an extent, no one wants to let go of you after spending money on training you.

  17. George says:

That was courtesy my wonderful parents. They don’t pay for college ever, and over the past week, they’ve only had to handle my laundry.

  18. sharad says:

    i see..ok…thnx!

  19. sharad says:

AND CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHICH certification test is very useful professionally…MCSD…or…?

  20. Karthik says:

    @Sharad,

    Microsoft certification ? :)

    Marc, do tell us.

  21. Marc says:

harish, no one can gather as much as you.

sharad, do you really want certification from the company that made Internet Explorer and Windows Vista?

You are too involved with trying to find out fancy things to do than actually learning something.

  22. sharad says:

    marc,…like it or not…microsoft rules the WORLD…EVEN YOURs!lolz

  23. sharad says:

well…ur second point isn’t entirely TRUE!

  24. Marc says:

    Rules the world? Hardly.

  25. sharad says:

dude…microsoft’s dream was to make all the computers use windows operating system…n they have been quite successful u have to hand it to them for the marketing!

  26. George says:

Well, yeah, he’s got you there Marc, you’re locked into Microsoft too.

Anyway, it depends on what you’re doing, but in general I don’t think the MCSDs and MCSEs are available any more and I don’t think anyone beyond some small companies thinks they mean anything.

  27. Marc says:

You know very well that the only reason I use Windows is for compatibility with games. Microsoft took over the market by aggressive and unethical business strategies. Anyone can do that.

And yeah the only companies that respect Microsoft certification are ones that work for them or use their products exclusively.

  28. George says:

Precisely, Marc. That’s what ‘lock in’ means.

  29. Karthik says:

pa ba pa pa pa, I am loving it. :P

  30. Vinod says:

    @ Marc
    I have a proof for Satish’s words.
Our passed out senior (I think you very well know Shiva) attended the off campus which is conducted by AU for all self financing colleges in the year 2006 (August 2006) and was placed in WIPRO. Now its almost two years and he is still waiting for the appointment order (Well he is now working in some other company). But other students who got placed in the same company in that year were called. Now what will you say about this??? So it is company’s wish to call a student after he is placed in that company or not. You will get the job for sure ONLY if you get the appointment order which tells you the date of joining. And even students who are placed through on campus can’t be given the assurance that they will get the job for sure. In one college in 2007 students were placed in Caritor (Keene system is its name now. I think…) and are yet to be called.
Wipro placed students (our set students) have started to go for training in Wipro now itself while they are studying… You can ask Gany for this. His friend is going for training now itself even though the course is not yet over. Getting placed by clearing the rounds in an interview won’t give you the assurance of getting a job. So don’t think that we are all placed. We are not placed till we get the appointment order mentioning the date of joining. This is what really happening in the IT industry.

  31. Karthik says:

    @Vinod,

Your semior Shiva must either sue Wipro or Anna University. And what’s he doing about it anyway ? If it were me, I’d have gone to their office and demanded an explanation. Or sent them mails at half an hour intervals till they replied.

Having said that, demand for people in It industry is extremely dynamic. One day they want 1000 people , the other day they no longer can have them on their payroll. But if you are good enough, (and you will be if you are working towards your passion and not just joining Engg for herd behavioral reasons) then theres no reason to fear anything.

But Wipro has this reputation of calling people really really late. Losers!!

Also, if so many people realise that IT is infact bad, then it’s time to explore other avenues, don’t you think ?

(BTW, you can’t really call our Infy placement as placement because it was worse than a mock interview. They will kick incompetent people out during training.)

  32. sharad says:

oh! ok thanks GEORGE…u 2 MARC!

  33. Marc says:

Vinod, you have incorrect information. Delays in getting the offer letter is not the same as not being called for the job at all. The company has to call you for the job eventually. They have a legal obligation.

  34. Vinod says:

No way man! You are not sure to be called just because you have an offer letter sent by the company. go and ask seniors if you need any proof. Just talk to seniors sometime to know whats going on there with them. There are so many seniors from other colleges too who still didn’t get their appointment order but their juniors have been called for training. There are many of them who waited for more than two years for the job but didn’t get and eventually ended in some BPO.
