RadioVeRVe - Indian Rock Music (Online Radio)

Chetan found this excellent online radio station called RadioVeRVe.

RadioVeRVe is all about Indian rock music. They play a wide variety of songs from Indian bands and only Indian bands. (No crap from Indian movies.)

They have RJs too who pop in now and then and name the song or provide more information about the band. Recently they had a special programme where they played songs from the latest LBG album ‘Bad Children’ which by the way is really awesome. We’re getting George to buy it for us.

Here’s the link to the stream when you’re ready to listen. Listen to RadioVeRVe

They’ve given to lots of options but I suggest you use Winamp since that’s the simplest method. They’ve not mentioned the Ultra quality stream. If you have a 256 kbps connection or higher use this stream URL. http://play-ultra.radioverve.com/ (It’s not clickable for a reason. You’re not supposed to use your browser to open it. See this.)

Rippin’ Them Speakers Apart

Courtney Love - Mono
I saw this song on VH1 sometime back and liked it instantly. The video is cool and the song itself is a heavy angry song.

Godsmack - Serenity
A slow song with deep heavy beats and classical/oriental (sort of) sounds. Not what you’d expect from the guys who sang Awake but still very good.

Rage Against The Machine - Sleep Now In The Fire
A fiery song with hard hitting (meaningful) lyrics. Industrial rock. You’ll be screaming “Sleep now in the fire!” before the song is over. Play this one loud.

Rammstein - Du Hast
I watched Reservoir Dogs recently (review later) and trivia mentioned that the Du Hast video was inspired by the movie. So of course I had to listen to the song again. There’s an English version too that’s hard to find but I have it.

Korn - Twisted Transistor
An amazing song. Great tune and very heavy. Brilliant music video. You have to listen to this one.

Depeche Mode - Precious
Depeche Mode - A Pain That I’m Used To

I respect Depeche Mode for their unique brand of slow music and strange sounds mixed it that provides a surreal effect. Try them out. The songs might seem odd the first time but listen to them a few times.

Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name Of
This is the perfect song to play at college rock shows. It’s all about non-conformism. Characteristic industrial rock with a catchy chorus.

Nightwish - Nemo
A beautiful fast song with a great chorus. Gothic pop rock. Nightwish sounds a little bit like Evanescence.

Rock Show & Culturals at MCC, This Saturday

The Mad Christian Club, the place where George usually hangs out, is hosting their culturals.

I’m planning to going to the rock show on Saturday at 3 PM. (Why the hell is it in the middle of the goddamn day?!) Entry is Rs. 80 and the band Them Clones is coming.

Anyone coming? Chetan refuses to go cause the exams are not officially over. But the last exam is Professional Ethics for him (and Principles of Management for me) so it doesn’t count. Damn nerd. Suren is coming I think.

Vinod says he has “no interest”. Ditto Sundar. I need new collegemates. The ones I have are defective.

Ear Damage at the Unwind Center (Again)

It was Friday again, so we (Chetan and I) went to the Unwind Center for Live 1o1. This time we were armed with Chetan’s digital camera.

The usual gang was there including Sid and (Not That) Fat (Anymore) Kishore. I ran into Raghavendra from PSBB too!

Raghavendra and Marc

(That damn multiple flash in Chetan’s camera is idiotic. It completely blinds the person being photographed and forces them to close their eyes or squint. I’d rather have red eyes in photographs than closed eyes.)

First up was a band called Blood and Iron. The lead singer had an excellent hoarse voice. It was perfect for some of their heavier songs but didn’t really suit the Metallica songs they played. Their guitarists were good too.

Blood and Iron 2

Then some British guy called Taylor came up on stage and sang a few songs with pre-recorded music (karaoke). He got a poor response cause he was surrounded by rock and metal lovers and he was singing Red Hot Chilly Peppers.

Next was Wreckage Avenue (previously known as Asteroid). These chaps heir drummer wasn’t very good.were old classmates of Chetan. They were pretty good but they really need a new drummer!

When the show was over he were hanging about outside and I suggested Chetan take a shot of the outside of the building. It was dark and there were cables in the way but it turned out alright I guess.

Wreckage Avenue 1

Let’s see what happens next week, if we go there. I’d like to see some other types of music performed there. The rock and metal combination is getting rather boring.

Live 1o1 on Friday at the Unwind Center, Adyar (July 22, 2006)

After bugging Chetan repeatedly, he finally confirmed the location of Live 1o1 at the Unwind Center every Friday. It turned out to be at 3rd Cross Street in Gandhi Nagar, a location we knew well and was close to Chetan’s house. How the heck did I miss the large Unwind Center board on that road? It must have been installed only recently.

So our crazy journey all over North Chennai to reach Nelson Manickam Road at Nungambakkam to try to find Unwind Center was in vain. (We did find the place, except that they had abandoned it months earlier. D’oh!) Our route was so haphazard that we ended up travelling 42 kilometres by the time we reached Besant Nagar, tired and grimy with aching backs, for dinner at Subway/Prime Roaster.

So anyway, we went to the place at 7:30 PM. Chetan wanted a lift from his house to there even thought it was hardly 200 metres away. People were hanging about waiting for the show to start. We went to the first floor and bought a ticket each for Rs. 100, which was a piece of tear-resistant paper around our wrists like the ones in theme parks. I ran into Sid Hande (junior at SMA, tennis player) at the entrance, who said he was going to be singing and I promptly declared that I wanted my money back.

The inside was a medium sized L shaped hall with a small performance area with the drums behind a transparent sheet (to reduce the intensity of sound cause the place was small) at the joint of the L. There were lots of cool looking speakers all around the stage. There were some wooden stair-like structures to sit on in the smaller arm of the L. This is where Chetan and I found places to sit. On the longer arm of the L was some more standing space, a few chairs and then the sound equipment behind that.

First up was a hip-hop act. I’ve forgotten their names. But they were really really good. The one song I recognised was Eminem & Dr. Dre - Forgot About Dre and there was another Tupac song which sounded excellent.

Then came Sid Hande and his gang who called themselves Skrat. Sid was surprisingly good at the vocals. The drums in the closed environment drowned out all other sounds which kindof sucked. They played Creed - What If really well. Sid’s vocals were brilliant, a complete change from the soft voice he used in a previous song. His mom was there too, and some of his classmates (my juniors) from SMA.

There were some Americans from California who played next. Their own composition Set Me On Fire was decent but nothing new. Their drummer looked awesome with his tattoos and bulging muscles.

The last was Nerverek and Chetan said he’d heard them earlier. They played loud and heavy and I can’t really say how good their were cause it was way too loud. My ears still hurt. Not the band’s fault. Their guitarists were brilliant, coaxing all sorts of improbable sounds from the guitar. They got the crowd going with some covers and some own compositions.

My only gripe with the place is that the drums get too loud. My ears still hurt! Next time I’m wearing ear plugs. It’ll cut out all the noise and I can hear only the music, the way it’s supposed to be. A pity we don’t have more gigs like this or places that encourage music in Chennai. Kudos to the Unwind Center trust for encouraging bands and artists this way.

Chetan says his friends’ band Wreckage Avenue is playing next week. Let’s see how it goes. Till then, rock on!

(I’m not linking to the Unwind Center website since it is outdated.)

An Indian Rock Music Collection (Torrent)

I found this torrent on Isohunt titled Indian Rock - An Introduction and I went ahead and downloaded it. (Why not? Nothing better to download anyway.)

It was 49.3 MB and I must say it was quite a good collection. Most of the songs were rather good which was surprising. Well, the death metal songs sounded awful; but I think that’s because death metal is supposed to sound awful. :D

Here’s the link to the torrent: Indian Rock - An Introduction

There are a few seeds and I’m seeding it too, so hurry up and download it. The songs it contains are:

1. Indus Creed - Pretty Child
2. Joint Family - Drummer’s Advice
3. Messiah - Knocked Out Mouse
4. Pentagram - Ten
5. Pin Drop Violence - In Dependence
6. Them Clones - My Life
7. Thermal And A Quarter - Paper Puli
8. Zero - PSP 12
9. Bhoomi - Vertigo
10. Colourblind - Colourblind
11. Demonic Resurrection - A Darkness Descends
12. Exhumation - Oceans Of Hatred

In case you’re not sure how to download torrents:
1. Download the torrent file (it has the extension .torrent)
2. Download uTorrent
3. Open downloaded file with uTorrent and it will begin downloading.

Note: Download might take some time to start.
